send txt messages to Philippines

I have been out of contact with my friends from back home because of communication tool barriers (I guess). They don’t use much of email as I do. In the Philippines, out main form of communication is either landline phone or cellphone (mobile) – text messaging. Aren’t we “the txt capital of the world”? Filipinos spend so much time and money fingering those tiny keypads. Some or maybe most can do it even without looking.

Yahoo messenger actually helps but we have 12hr difference and oftentimes, I get offline messages for not being online at the same time. So, I decided to look for some alternatives. My sister have been using Chikka SMS messenger for a while. This client lets you send txt messages to the Philippines for free with some restrictions (hey.. at least it’s still free). My dilemma is, 1 out of 57 tries to their server —Unable to freakin connect. Poor support on their website and maybe they only allow limited access to their servers (server?). Who knows?!

I got some good news though. They have java client. It’s OK; but not perfect. Java Chikka messenger is not well polished unlike the PC-client but it works for me for the least part. I’m not gonna bits more about this product. It helps me communicate with my friends in my homeland when I’m sitting on my computer, it’s better than nothing at all. I find out that more people (pinoys) are likely to reply on SMS txt message than email or IM.

One more thing… ALLTEL phone users: you can send txt message to PH (or maybe anywhere around the world) by sending it by this format
011 + [country code] + [areacode+mobile phone #].
From US to Globe PH: I also use this format (to phils only)
+63[cell#]@globe.rply.net

ALLOFMP3

I love this service!! Not only I can buy music for a lot less than iTunes and other DRM music stores, it is unprotected. When I first heard this site a few months ago, I was so skeptical, why would I trust Russian website with my credit card? Then one day, I had to download this very old song (…corny song) and other albums but I don’t have enough money to buy it from iTunes or buy the CD. So I tried allofmp3.com and bought a $10.00 credit with my credit card. My guts tell me that if something happen, I can always call a dispute with my bank. Lo and behold, I was HOOKED. I recommend this to all frugal people!!

Here’s one more good reason:

Download their software (Allofmp3 Explorer) and preview songs as many times, as many tracks as you want in FULL LENGTH. Not 10 secs not 30 secs but full length baby! It might even work for you without buying it.

I’m a filipino and I hope that the Philippine recording companies should follow this model and get those Original Pilipino Music (OPM) available online for download. Filipino mp3 are quite hard to find; except if you are an IRC addict. More power to you guys who still serve them on irc channels.

EZTV feeds

I love Azureus for having a user friendly bit torrent client and RSSFeed Scanner. I’ve been getting my TV shows from EZTV feeds but lately its giving me errors..

“Failed – HTML Content returned but no torrent link”

I thought there’s something wrong with my plugin so I reinstalled it –no luck. So I followed the instruction on putting mininova on the custom referer and IT DID NOT WORK! Thanks!

The solution that I found was changing the feed to mininova’s eztv link which is: http://tvrss.net/sources/eztv_m/ it works great now. Send me some other interesting video feed. Forget about the $1.99 video from iTunes, that service sucks.
